A Glance at Morocco
This newest body of work, has been inspired by a visit to that compelling country. The opposing influences of western cultures, ie Britain, France and Spain plus middle eastern Islamic traditions, have resulted in a captivating mix of religions, art and life style. This has been portrayed in paintings of market stalls, a city skyline and those of village and country surroundings. The buildings of mosques, Jewish temples, walled Islamic kasbahs, crumbling sand and earthen domestic dwellings, alongside the more substantial concrete reinforced versions, provide a bewildering array of the old and the new.
Tourism, a mainstay for the country’s economy, has resulted in a breathtaking abundance of markets and selling outlets, and a softening of traditional views.
The Saharan Desert and presence of snow clad Atlas Mountains provides startling contrast to the bustling city centres.
A foray into the desert surprises with the colours and the tantalizing interplay of light and shadows dunes of an ever-changing kaleidoscope of geometrics and organic shapes. They contain the secrets of days long gone, which are forever being uncovered with the shifting sands. Thousands of relics of shells and early life forms from Cambrian times, through prehistoric life forms, and bones of early man, offer their stories.
